Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration, under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, has introduced a pivotal update for foreign nationals: the Transitional Residence Permit, commonly known as the Bridging Visa. This innovative policy, encapsulated in the Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation Number 11 of 2024, came into effect on April 1, 2024, and offers a practical solution for those navigating the complexities of immigration statuses.
The Bridging Visa enables holders of Visit Visas, Limited Stay Permits (KITAS), or Permanent Stay Permits (KITAP) to apply for new permits seamlessly without the need to exit Indonesian borders. This visa remains valid for 60 days and is strictly applicable to those within Indonesia. To apply, individuals must access the evisa.imigrasi.go.id platform and complete their immigration fee payment no later than three days before their existing permit expires.
This policy is a game-changer, significantly reducing the financial, time, and energy costs associated with traditional visa renewal processes, where leaving the country is often required. Director General Silmy Karim highlighted that the Bridging Visa is designed to provide legal certainty and facilitate the immigration service process, making it less cumbersome for foreigners residing in Indonesia. This move reflects the country’s commitment to enhancing its immigration system and supporting the expatriate community effectively.
